Welcome to the Horizon/ IB Biology Magnet
The Horizon magnet program is a rigorous, four-year course of study for the most academically talented students to ensure their success during and after high school. Students in the Horizon program study coursework in the 9th and 10th grade International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme to enter the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in the 11th grade. The interdisciplinary program features a collaborative approach to instruction.
Biology in South Carolina is centered around five core areas: energy, cells, heredity, biological evolution, and ecosystem dynamics. Each topic is the theme of a content standard. |
Goals –The course will increase students ability to develop questions based on observations and research, develop a probable answer to their question, gather data specific to their answer, analyze that data, draw a logical conclusion about their proposed answer to their question, and support their conclusion using data from experiments and research. The students will develop a greater ability to think critically in any given situation.
**Students in Biology will take the SC End-of-Course Test at the end of the year that will be based on the standard topics above and count towards 20% of the course grade.
Units of Study:
Unit 1: Cells – 20 days
Unit 2: Energy – 10 days
Unit 3: Heredity/Chromosomal Inheritance – 10 days
Unit 4: Molecular Genetics – 15 days
Unit 5: Evolution – 7 days
Unit 6: Ecology – 13 days
EOC Review & Testing – 5 days
